EVE: Grind leads to greatness

I found a few comments interested related to the R&K video I posted last weekend. In particular, the mention of ‘grind’ related to getting into Nova.

If getting into Nova was not ‘hard’, Nova would not be worth what it’s worth. It would not be populated by a top-end Corp, nor would it be of interest to another top-end Corp. The work, setup, and billions of ISK in hardware that went into making that final battle so epic would not have happened.

If you could just take your fleet and “queue up” for Nova whenever was most convenient for you, owning it would have little value. It would, you know, be like all those ‘accessible’ PvP objectives in a whole bunch of MMOs with horrible PvP. I’d rather ‘grind’ to get to good PvP than have horrible PvP ‘accessible’ to me, but I’m weird like that.

To be fair, didn’t that video take place over a year’s time? It was an awesome video, but was the result worth the year of not so epic stuff? I don’t know, I wasn’t there.

    • SynCaine says:

The timeline is a year+ yes, but it’s not like R&K sat around for an entire year probing one wormhole. Even from the video it seems like they took a break from Nova for a bit.

Was there a lot of time put into the whole thing? Yes.
Do I believe that the amount of time directly relates to the “epicness” of the event? Yes.

Word on the street is that serious conflict is coming to nullsec as soon as the Supers can no longer logoffski and Titans cannot doomsday logi.

There is no way to know if it will be epic empire smashing war, but we can always hope!

    • SynCaine says:

From what I’m seeing, people are hoping TiDi works as advertised, and the big battles are not determined by cheese tactics. Lot of fun stuff to look forward to come Nov 28th.

Huge long term grudge matches is what Eve has that other games lack. There used to be similar situations in DAOC when it had high numbers.

These are the kind of things where you really can say “I was there”.

It is not something that happens instantly. Sometimes you just want to log in and shoot someone, but it is not really epic. I was amazed thinking about the effort and planning to collapse and cycle through all of those wormholes until they hit the correct one. That was kool.

I think the new changes to capitals will make a significant change in 0.0 warfare, I can’t wait to see what happens.

Syncaine, you should put together another Rattlesnake so we can “grind” through some systems looking for the CCP fleet floating around.

Heard about this Pathfinder Online game that was just announced? Seems to be a fantasy sandbox developed by former CCP members.

Grind, grind, grind for 37 minutes of drama – it better be epic. I’m not even trying to troll here. If EvE added a BG i’d be upset. In fact if there was a fantasy version of this I’d be selling it hard to anyone that would listen. But there is no easy way into this game and no awesomeness for the guy that just wants to creep around and occasionally stab someone in the back, so many of us interested in this kind of experience (on a more compressed scale time-wise) sit on the sidelines and read about Eve instead of giving the devs money. This to me is the main problem facing CCP.

    • SynCaine says:

Pre-Incarna I think CCP would have agreed with you. They made a (weak) attempt to expand EVE into the mass market or more ‘casual’ space.

And then they realized that having 400k+ subs is ‘good enough’ (and that those 400k will leave like they said they would), and that to get to 500k+ subs, they don’t need to change the game they have, they just have to keep making it better, and EVE players will keep expanding the game through positive buzz and getting their buddies to sign up. It’s worked for 7 years, why stop now.

I think what this post tries to say is that some people seek what is called ~impact PvP~ in a MMO.
Its like poker with high stakes vs. playing “for interest”.
Only that in MMOs the main currency is invested time.
In eve you can do this extreme levels (for example dropping your lone supercarrier on targets of opportunity, knowing that you’ll land on watchlists of a lot of people who will then try and and bait you)

Its obv. not for everyone, and even the people who enjoy it often look for a change.
Thats why LoL for example is so popular – its quick and guaranteed fun.
