Does the average gamer know more about game creation than the average developer? Oh sure, absolutely. Is it perfectly likely that there are gamers who do know what is best for a game, eclipsing that of the very game designers?

The point about the hardcore actually understanding it better is something I hadn't expressly thought of before, but now that it's in my mind I doubt I'll forget it any time soon. Humorously, I'd bet most of the people bemoaning the hardcore ruining the games are the same people who would be shocked to realise that the reason they can play their class/beat a raid/make monies to a semi-competent level is because of those very same hardcore types doing the legwork and writing a guide.

Regarding LoL, I think you're right, and there's two things to chief pick up on: one is that the champs are *interesting* but they aren't imbalanced, they all have a flavour, a theme, a nice unifying look and feel but they also work mathematically as well as bringing flavour (which is, of course, what Rift failed to do). The other is that when the standards are high, it's very noticeable when their champ balancing and ideas are really shit, which has been alarmingly prevalent recently: Darius was nerfed but is still great fun to play, Draven is just bizarre and Jayce is just, well, not fun to play against. When I'm playing AD Ezreal, it becomes disheartening to play against a champ who has a stronger, splash damage version of my basic skillshot, can completely negate my blink and who can just waltz up, smack me back with his hammer and then his supercharged ranged Q, take at least half my health then waltz back out whilst my combo is either too risky to use since it puts AS on CD or just too weak.
