Server is down, waiting…
:the pain:
Also currently debating what server type to plan on. Leaning towards open, but CoW (the blogger and friends guild) are going standard. Guess knowing a bit more about how the tiers are layed out should help with that decision. The thought that I might be playing a PvP game on a ‘carebear’ server does not sit well with me, but again, I’ll have to see how it all works in beta.
Meh its not really care bear. I mean its open territory. You can still fight whenever you want. Besides when you walk into an RVR area you have 10 seconds to get out or you are flagged. I mean the only difference will be you cant get ganked 24/7. I still get in tons of fights on a regular server. I just dont want to deal with it if I have had a crappy day know what I mean?
Also the asshat factor is usually higher on open ended PVP, much like we saw in Conan. Thats just me feel free to flame away. Either rules type you WILL be getting your PVP on and quite a bit.
these games seldom keep to teh lore anyways so if I see an orc or elf I cant kill its ok. I think I like being able to choose based on the kind of day I’m having. As long as there ARE pvp/rvr areas I’m cool with it. In Wow it was all or nothing, except in BG’s and capital cities.
When choosing a server, I think its important to think about how the ruleset might affect the community atmosphere too.
In DAOC, the RP servers quickly became the most popular because the extra restrictions (RP-lite) were just enough to discourage the obvious arse-hats.
As for Open vs. Core… I think I’d guess Core would be more likely to attract a mature community. And not for the reason you’ld think. I’ve done the PvP thang (3 years on Tallon Zek), and while it does add to the experience, you have to go into it EXPECTING to PvP first and do some PvE if you get the enemy cleared out and still have time.
Again, it does definitely add to the whole experience, but I just don’t have the time or patience I did 8 years ago… and I bet I’m not alone in that.
I think it’s important to remember that Core servers will likely end up more focused on real RvR and less on smaller skirmishes. The way the game’s designed, the RvR is meant to take place in certain areas. On an Open RvR server, you’ll instead find people all over fighting everywhere. That can be a turn on, I’m sure. But I’d rather have my RvR where it’s meant to be. :P
That, and I’d rather separate my PvP from my PvE. That’s just a personal choice though. Basically, exactly what Grimjakk said. I’m always 2 hours late to the prom.
Just think of the PvE areas as the calm before the storm. If you see enemies there, then that allows tension to build. It’s like walking out of the bar or away from where kids are watching before you start fighting. Sometimes, the tension of having to wait makes the battle all the more enjoyable.
…or, um, so I’ve heard.
Dude, DAoC’s got a great reputation as a PvP game, and it was limited to RvR only in certain areas (the frontiers) with large PvE areas off-limits. Trust Mythic :) WAR is even better with putting consensual RvR right near where you PvP, with the addition of instances you can queue for all the time. Open or Core won’t matter much at all, except for bragging rights.
