Super white login screen that initially blurs your text + loud music you can’t turn off + not being able to play thanks to some random error = Jesus MMO has finally arrived.
But hey, its only beta and it’s not like I paid for this…
To be fair, I’m sure ArenaNet had no idea how many people might be trying to log in, this being 2012 and this whole “first day of an MMO” thing being total new. Now if we had, say, 15 years to look back on and plan for this, that would be different. Also this being ArenaNet’s first MMO (get it?) and being just a tiny studio with a limited budget, what can you really expect?
slowclap
They say that the first Guild Wars wasn’t really… OH I SEE NOW!!!
What u did there, I see it.
“loud music you can’t turn off”
Cog icon, top left. Good luck with the Eurogamer gig, though.
My mistake, how could I have missed the light-gray icon on the white background that opens up a light-gray menu with no save button.
Jesus MMO walks on water once again.
A simple ‘thankyou Melmoth’ would have sufficed.
I know right. Not like this is a beta or anything….
I’ve been playing all day long without a single issue. Calm the fuck down. It really must suck to be such a bitter depressed “veteran” like yourself who has to sensationalize every single flaw. Stick to your shitty EVE stories, I sure as hell wouldn’t want you in the same game i’m playing.
You’re post has just fed me enough tears to live off of for another month. Let me know what beta you’re testing in 5 months kay?
@Anonymous: GW2 beta got you so aroused, lol.
Enjoy it, just don’t make infantile posts.
Reviewing a login screen is post-postmodern! For what it’s worth, I liked the log in.
It’s a good theme park MMO. If you expected more, you’ll be disappointed. But why would you have expected more?
Most surprising thing so far? It’s *really* like GW1. For some reason it never occurred to me it would be even slightly similar.
Heh, that’s the most discouraging thing I have seen about the game so far! I am not so worried about launcher issues during the beta for a game that doesn’t even have a release date yet.
But GW1 never really worked for me. There was a lot to like there, but something about it always put it way down the list of things I wanted to play.
“Heh, that’s the most discouraging thing I have seen about the game so far!”
That rings so very true.
As you say, GW1 is full of nice ideas but in the end it’s deeply unsatisfying to play.
@bhagpuss: It seems a lot of people (myself included) really didn’t think it would be anything like GW1 and that it was just the setting that really tied them together, but it is interesting that they’ve actually made it a sequel in more than that sense.
I think its about as far away from GW1 as you can get tbh, they share lore obviously but I dont really see a lot of the original series in GW 2
To clarify, it is extremely clearly the same world. It’s not just that the names are the same, I can recognize the same landmarks, the same type of creatures are in the same places, some of the spells/skills have the same names and it jsut *feels* the same.
I’m not suggesting the gameplay is identical – clearly it isn’t. On the other hand, neither have I found it all that different from certain other MMOs I’ve played, as I plan to go into at interminable and tedious length on my own blog next week.
@wilhelm I think you may indeed have a problem with GW2, because not only is it very like GW1 in look, feel and setting but I would argue the game it is most like after that is Vanguard, which is another one I think you didn’t get on with. Still, three’s the charm!

Is INQ on Yaks Bend? Thats where I be and I’ve seen an INQ. Yesterday we were wvwvwing it up against Goons server. I think we lost the point total by the end of the day, but it was good fun. Today we’re no longer paired against any competent server wvw wise so we control every friggin point on all 4 maps :/
Ya I got pretty bored of facerolling noobs today and logged off after about two hours of them holding NOTHING. I can see that being the death of this game.
After 2 days of beta? Troll much Cyndre? No offense but if you are going to base a games future over two days play before A. People understand what they are doing and B. The servers are evenly matched (tournament style setting at launch) then your opinion doesn’t seem credible
I’m hoping this post is merely a sarcastic imitation of the whiny self-centred entitlement mentality that the Wow kiddies are so famous for. That the self-appointed apostle of hardcore PVP would actually think this way is too pathetic for words.
Or perhaps he’s simply mocking yet another Jesus themepark that will soon come crashing down Mount Expectation like every other?
Maybe. Usually the point of mockery is to make the thing you’re mocking look bad though, not yourself.
What a devestating list of problems. If only they had been able to catch them and correct them in the beta.
From what I’ve seen, the game is what I would of expected from a sequel to Guild Wars and is nothing special to me… but I guess it’s a step in the right direction for themepark games.
Surely you can use your headphone amp to turn down music if it’s too loud, or did the Jesus game miraculously manage to disable that as well?
The post was about the loud music in this Jesus game not about his skills with operating a headphone amp volume knob, wasn’t it?
i thought darkfall was the wow killer???
oh right its so good u dont play it anymore
its so good only a few hundred nerds still play it
lol
turds like u give blogging a bad name
I thought that sliced bread was a wow killer…
The people they allow on the internet boggles my mind.
Has any studio ever got this right? I’m not being contrary, I’m just curious if there is any in the business who could plausibly claim to have some ITIL like best practices for launching an MMO that are both effective and tested.
swtor launched pretty much flawless… they just got everything else wrong.
They actually got a lot right. It’s much closer to the sort of themepark Syncaine likes (ie. old era WoW) than you guys really accept.
Swtor got nothing else right. The game was terrible in almost every way. I couldn’t even tolerate playing a second day of my free trial, let alone paying for that pile of tripe.
That says more about you than about the game, though.
IIRC Rift had a pretty good beta and launch.
One could argue Rift was a better game in beta than at launch… :)
So much tears in these comments. All hail Syncaine, king of the trolls.
so many tears… L2Trollinenglish
