Damn competitive market!

To the MMO minor leagues!

“The MMO market is very dynamic and we need to be dynamic as well,” he says. “Unless people are happy with what they have, they are constantly demanding updates, new modes and situations. So we are looking at free-to-play but I can’t tell you in much detail. We have to be flexible and adapt to what is going on.” (emphasis mine)

Or you could make a decent MMO to compete in the MMO market space.

That said, SW:TOR will be the first F2P game featuring the ‘4th pillar’, so they have that going for them I guess. And its going to be tough for future companies to compete in the F2P space now, what with the entry price being $300m. EAWare; raising the bar!

  2. Lies! I can be perfectly happy with what I have and still demand updates, new modes, and situations.

I have a SWTOR post queued up for a specific date a couple months out. I might have to pull that in to make sure it is still relevant in the aftermath of the drop in subscribers, the layoffs, the server merges, and now this talk of going free to play.

So, I guess we’re not going to hear about a pile of new, fully voiced storyline content any time soon. But we might eventually get to see a much more elaborate version of Clone Wars Adventures.

Interesting that that Games(tm) interview you linked has been pulled from their site. I saw it referenced elsewhere too.

Um, because that’s the entire point of an MMORPG — updates, new modes, and situations. Was this guy solely making singleplayer offline games before this, or what?

Voiced quests will include calls for donations, like public radio pledge drives. Send $XXX if you want to be able to use the space bar to skip this.

Finally a business case for all that voice work.

Yup! I don’t really think that monthly subscriptions are dead, so much that there just aren’t very many MMOs that are worth paying $15/month for.

Give me something that’s not WoW, *BUT* has the *same* amount of content as WoW, and I would shell out a monthly fee till the end of time!

The problem is that most MMOs only launch with the barest fraction of the content they need to be worth a subscription. And even with that fraction they still take 5 years to make. It’s kind of a lose-lose situation.
