Jester is a bit of a weird bird (and I say that with upmost respect).
On the one hand, he is that rare player that is worth hundreds if not thousands of subscriptions in EVE. He is exactly the type of player you want if you are a dev; he gets people excited for the game, he knows his stuff, and he represents the game and its players in an excellent light. On top of that, he is a top-level player of a game where being anything above average means a great deal, and his overall knowledge of all things EVE is amazing, as is his ability to communicate it via his blog.
On the other hand, dude is a complete doe-eyed MMO newbie outside of EVE.
He was excited for GW2 for all the reasons most of us saw as your typical PR fluff (living world, action combat, basically that whole manifesto of lies), and then when the game came out went through the expected non-descript cycle with the game and moved on, despite thinking it would play out different for him initially. (I’d provide links but lazy).
Now, he is looking forward to ESO thanks to that… interesting PvP video they recently released. The Keen and Graev comments section is a good reflection of what most thought of the video (and the game overall). I just find the contrast amusing; here is a man who is such an expert at the most complex MMO out, yet that same person buys into the terribly produced hype of themepark MMOs.
Maybe that whole Jester/Garth thing isn’t just a blog gimmick…
Well, like most players, he does view the world through the lens of what he does in New Eden. He has, in the past, been critical of things simply because they wouldn’t work in his corner of the game. A common myopia, but he has such reach that it does make me wince at time. If I say something dumb, six people see it, if he does, half of New Eden sees it.
Anyway, I think we’re seeing a bit of that here as well. Not being immersed in the fantasy MMORPG thing, he hasn’t acquired the cynicism to see through what the dev is saying to assess what it might really mean.
Good guy over all though, and his minor imperfections make me feel better about my massive ones.
As I said in that very post, my feelings about ESO run hot and cold. I’m not pre-judging before I play it…
Ha, such a noob blogger move, waiting until you play something before forming an opinion. You’ll learn!
Hee! Maybe.
In the meantime, one of the things that drew me to EVE was 200v200 fights over sov that really moved the influence map (this was 2008). Those days in EVE are clearly OVER.
But they might just be starting in ESO. If I can have a 200v200 fight over a castle there that makes me Duke of Vvardenfell or whatever and there’s an ESO influence map that shows that? …yeah. I might endure a little bit of theme park to get that kind and size of game play back.
Good point Jester. Null wars now are all about piling on ships to break the game to save SOV. It’s a crappy loophole and I wish CCP would improve their server technology. TiDi and node crashing are shitty solutions.
Jester is one of my fav bloggers in EVE. He is also a goldmine of practical information. For me his FOTW series were invaluable in teaching me how to – or not to – fit a ship.
The only thing I can really fault him on is his fawning admiration of CCP. Sometimes it borders on extreme sugary sweetness and is a bit too much for me to stomach.
fawning admiration of CCP? sugary sweetness?
Do we read the same Jester?
I see it more as trying to be moderate when players are impatient or outraged because of nothing.
Yes we do. Shall I quote some memory CSM statements by Jester? ;)
*memorable
No need, I’ll believe you. We probably just disagree over interpretation.
I honestly don’t mind (or notice, really) that aspect. Plus if there is one dev house to have blind faith in, its CCP. Oh how I wish CCP was running a few other MMOs…
I file away every FOTW in EFT in the hope that maybe the accumulation of fits will eventually teach me something. At least they give me a starting place on things.
i think like me its just hoping against hope that it an be the game im looking for
Speaking of ESO, I’m not sure you’ve seen this video. If you have the power to endure to the end, the last sentence will resonate in your soul – then shatter it into a million pieces.
what the last sentence? i dont have time to watch a 9min video
Guys voice is unreal annoying. Not sure if I’m going to make it all 9min…
Come on tell us the last sentence…
I think it’s the “why can’t anyone make a good MMO” sentence, but I can’t be sure.
Yes. Every MMO announcement I hear from every company planning one is killing my soul just a little bit. WoW is turning into a joke of a joke. Everything I watched about Wildstar is straight from my list of “everything I hated about Cataclysm and made me quit the game”. Now this one is going to suck too. So will EQNL from what you are saying. Then there’s GW2… What is wrong with these people? You were promising me that the MMO dark age was ending?
There’s always EVE which I played for a year and enjoyed it massively, but… that’s a long complicated story.
Wow was always a joke most of u just didn’t get it cuz it was ur first mmo
